The creative process in the audiovisual industry is a fascinating journey involving a series of interlinked stages, from conceiving the screenplay to materializing the imaginary on screen. In this process, several phases intertwine to create the films and television shows we enjoy so much: screenplay development, visual development, pre-production, production, post-production, distribution and, finally, reception.

It is a creative process with an intricate synergy between many agents (such as screenwriters, directors, producers, executives and casts), advanced technologies and corporate decisions. Analysing the creative process in this sector requires a deep understanding of how these elements, which intertwine artistic and commercial aspects, shape the imaginary universes that films and series share with their audiences. In the article “Processo criativo na indústria do audiovisual: do roteiro ao imaginário” (Creative process in the audiovisual industry: from screenplay to the imaginary), published in the journal Galaxia, Sílvio Antonio Luiz Anaz seeks to understand this process, which unfolds collaboratively, under the influence of market dynamics and through a range of psychocultural aspects.

The article draws on the heuristic perspective of the imaginary (following Eliade, Durand and Barros), incorporating Jung’s concept of the archetype and using the mythocritical method. Its results include both a detailed map of the creative process and a preliminary method for analysing creative gestation in the audiovisual industry.

The topic was discussed on 21 August at a meeting of the study group “Technologies, Arts and Semiosis in Health Education”, at the Educational Video Laboratory (LVE) of the Nutes Institute, UFRJ, in Rio de Janeiro.
