I am a professor and researcher at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), working across media, cognition, semiotics, neuroscience, science and health education, and science communication. My work examines how images, narratives, technologies and systems of representation participate in learning, meaning-making and the public circulation of knowledge.
Background and education
My academic background spans fields that now converge in my research and teaching. I hold a degree in Law from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, a postgraduate qualification in Integrated Communication Management, a master’s degree in Image, Communication and Technology, and a doctorate in Literature, with a focus on Comparative Literature, from Fluminense Federal University. I also completed postdoctoral research in Biophysics at UFRJ and have pursued further studies in Italian Language and Literature.
Before dedicating myself fully to university work, I spent almost two decades at the School of Judicial Administration of the Rio de Janeiro State Court of Justice. Moving across law, communication, literature, semiotics, neuroscience and education has contributed to a strongly interdisciplinary research perspective.
Research and teaching
At UFRJ, I work in research, teaching, graduate supervision and public engagement related to media studies, educational technologies, audiovisual media, semiotics of culture, neuroeducation, telehealth, simulation, science communication and health communication. I lead the Cognition, Language and Audiovisual in Semiotic Systems (CLASS) research group and co-lead Neuroeduc – Neuroscience Applied to Education.
Between science and culture
My intellectual work is also shaped by literature, the arts, philosophy and media cultures. These fields inform the way I approach contemporary questions concerning science, technology, education and human experience, both in academic research and in essays, talks and public communication projects.
Teaching, talks and collaboration
I teach at undergraduate and graduate levels, supervise students and participate in interdisciplinary projects. I also give talks and professional development activities on media, cognition, science communication, educational technologies, neuroeducation, scientific culture and health professions education.
