The scientific journal Expressa Extensão published the article IMPLEMENTAÇÃO DE OFICINAS DE MÉTODO CIENTÍFICO PARA A PROMOÇÃO DO ENSINO INVESTIGATIVO (Implementing scientific method workshops to promote inquiry-based teaching). I wrote it with Alfred Sholl-Franco and Letícia Silva, and it concerns the outreach project REDENEURO: Network for Studies in Neuroeducation, which I coordinate at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). In the article we describe how we created a set of training workshops for implementing inquiry-based learning projects and adapted them for the online environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. We present the results of these changes and the challenges we faced. The article is available at: https://periodicos.ufpel.edu.br/ojs2/index.php/expressaextensao/article/view/20525/0
Abstract
This study describes the development and implementation of an outreach initiative that trained basic education teachers and teacher-education students to apply inquiry-based teaching through the use of the scientific method in classrooms. A set of introductory workshops on the scientific method was developed and run in 2019 and 2020, first in person and then adapted to a remote format. It is a qualitative-quantitative, descriptive study carried out from the methodological perspective of action research and SWOT analysis (SWOT matrix), in cycles of implementation and redesign. Our results show a change in participants’ profile between the in-person and remote groups and the need to adjust how the target audience is addressed, mapping limitations and prospects for improving the project.
