The Telehealth, video-mediated simulation and audiovisual mediation research macroproject investigates how digital devices, audiovisual records and simulated situations participate in health professions education, reorganizing relationships among presence, care, language, professional performance and learning. Particular attention is given to situations in which audiovisual media become part of the structure of mediation itself, creating specific conditions for observing, interpreting, discussing and reconstructing clinical and educational practices.
Research question
How do audiovisual mediation and telehealth and simulation environments reconfigure processes of learning, communication, humanization and meaning-making in health professions education and healthcare?

Audiovisual media as mediation devices
The project approaches video as a medium that changes the conditions under which a clinical situation can be observed, remembered, analysed and discussed. Through repeated viewing, shifts in point of view, temporal deceleration and the recovery of details, audiovisual records create a particular temporality for educational work, making it possible to examine communicational and relational dimensions that may become less visible when participants rely solely on memory to reconstruct an experience.
Video-mediated simulation
The concept of video-mediated simulation is used to examine configurations in which the simulated experience is structured by audiovisual mediation at different moments, connecting prebriefing, enactment, observation, recording and debriefing. This formulation makes it possible to investigate simulation as a communicational and semiotic practice, considering how gestures, speech, framing, silences, language choices and forms of interaction become part of the material through which learning is subsequently elaborated.
Research axes
- telehealth and transformations of presence in healthcare and educational settings;
- video-mediated simulation and debriefing processes;
- multilingualism and clinical communication in educational contexts;
- humanization, empathy and relationship-building in technologically mediated situations;
- audiovisual analysis, meaning-making and formative assessment;
- artificial intelligence and digital technologies as resources for learning and feedback.
Related research
The macroproject brings together studies conducted by CLASS researchers and graduate students, including investigations of simulation in multilingual contexts, humanistic education for health professionals, video-mediated clinical interaction and the use of audiovisual media for observation, reflection and assessment. These studies share an interest in understanding how educational technologies become part of the formation of the learning experience itself, generating new objects of analysis and new possibilities for educational intervention.
Institutional connections
The project is developed at the NUTES Institute of Science and Health Education, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, connecting health professions education, media studies, semiotics and educational technologies within the CLASS research group, Cognition, Language and Audiovisual in Semiotic Systems.
