Basic Education Teachers’ Perceptions of Inquiry-Based Teaching under Brazil’s National Curriculum

I was delighted to learn of the publication of the full paper “Percepção de docentes da educação básica do estado do Rio de Janeiro sobre o uso do ensino investigativo em consonância com a Base Nacional Comum Curricular” (Perceptions of basic education teachers in the state of Rio de Janeiro on the use of inquiry-based teaching in line with the National Common Core Curriculum), presented at the 3rd National Meeting on Inquiry-Based Science Education (EnECI), held on 15–17 May 2024 in Belo Horizonte.

The paper was written by a group of researchers dedicated to education and the sciences: Márcia Oliveira (UFRJ – Professional Master’s in Education, Management and Dissemination of Biosciences); Vera Lúcia Cavalcante da Fonseca de Oliveira (UFRJ – Professional Master’s in Education, Management and Dissemination of Biosciences); Vanessa Alves de Oliveira Ransatto (UFRJ – Duque de Caxias Campus – Professional Master’s in Science for Teachers); Glaucio Aranha (UFRJ – Instituto NUTES de Educação em Ciências e Saúde, Educational Video Laboratory); Alfred Sholl-Franco (UFRJ – Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics, Centre for Science Communication and Neuroscience Teaching).

The paper addresses how basic education teachers in the state of Rio de Janeiro perceive the use of inquiry-based teaching in the classroom, as proposed by Brazil’s National Common Core Curriculum (BNCC). The preliminary results highlight the importance of equipping and training teachers in active and inquiry-based methodologies to promote scientific literacy and develop students’ critical thinking.
