I have just finished reading “Galileu Galilei: Um Revolucionário e Seu Tempo” (Galileo Galilei: a revolutionary and his time), by Atle Naess, published in Brazil by Zahar. It was a delightful dive into the history of science, giving me the pleasure of exploring the biography of the extraordinary figure that was Galileo.

Naess did a superb job. Engaging with the story of Galileo Galilei is, in many ways, engaging with the very roots of modern science. The book offers a detailed and well-researched account of Galileo’s life and work, emphasizing his role in the scientific revolution and his confrontation with the social and religious structures of his time. The author’s approach, based on rigorous research, strikes a balance between historical context and Galileo’s scientific contributions.

Reading each chapter, I was impressed by the author’s ability to describe not only Galileo’s scientific achievements but also to weave connections with the political and religious setting around him. This holistic approach allows a deeper understanding of the adversities Galileo faced and of how his discoveries challenged the established notions of his time.

A remarkable aspect of the book is the way it balances academic precision and accessibility. Scientific concepts and historical complexities are presented clearly, making it enjoyable for academics and science enthusiasts alike.

For me, it is a book that resonates in a special way. It provides rich historical material for higher education, and it is also a powerful reminder of the role scientists play in transforming our understanding of the world. Galileo was not just an observer of the sky; he was an architect of paradigms whose legacy continues to influence contemporary science.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in the intersection of science, history and society.
