Mental representations, the symbolic constructs that shape how we understand and interact with the world, are dynamic products of time and culture. Studying how they change historically is important for a deeper understanding of human evolution, in both a sociocultural and a cognitive sense. This role has been crucial in the development of historical and cognitive studies, offering a new lens through which to examine the complex tapestry of human experience.

Analysing mental representations over time offers deeper insight into how societies and cultures have evolved and how their cultural texts (cultural signs) are constructed. Our mental representations are shaped by the social norms, cultural values and technological knowledge of our respective times. By studying changes in mental representations, we can trace transformations in social structure, cultural revolutions and technological progress throughout history.

Mapping the historical path through which a culture’s mental representations are formed means entering an intricate labyrinth of meanings, in which every path we choose carries a myriad of interpretive possibilities. If we assume that the receiver’s understanding of a discourse materializes as a mental model expressed through that discourse, we are dealing with a complex process of transmuting thought into language, and vice versa.

In this scenario, the essence of the discourse is captured and decoded by the new receiver, not as an isolated entity, but as part of an ongoing dialogue between different mental models (or semiospheres). This dialogue generates a new interpretive synthesis, a new understanding that is both derived from and distinct from previous ones.

Here, however, a fundamental question arises: how can we trace and understand changes in these mental models over time? The answer is doubly complex, as it must take into account both synchronic changes, which occur at the same time in different contexts, and diachronic changes, which unfold over time within a single context.

Understanding these changes is essential not only for a deeper appreciation of the past and present but also for designing effective prospective studies. Such studies make it possible to outline lines of future possibility, a kind of road map that guides us through the uncertain territory of the future while allowing us to suggest new solutions.

Analysing synchronic and diachronic changes in mental representations and their discursive expressions is a monumental task, but an absolutely necessary one. It is an undertaking that requires not only skill and patience but also the courage to face the complexity inherent in human experience. This is how we should approach the study of changes in mental representations: as an unceasing search to understand human beings, their perspectives and, ultimately, their future.

This approach also provides valuable insights into human cognitive development and how we process and interpret the signs around us. Mental representations are fundamental tools we use to understand the world around us. By understanding how these representations have changed over time, we can begin to shed light on the mechanisms underlying human cognition and learning.

In Research in clinical reasoning: past history and current trends, for example, Geoffrey Norman identifies three broad mental representations that guide research on clinical reasoning: (a) understandings of reasoning as a general skill (the process of ‘clinical reasoning’); (b) representations that see clinical reasoning as a consequence of storage processes (memory); and (c) representations related to semantic qualifiers, scripts, schemas and exemplars.

Studies of this kind allow us to observe and understand historical changes in mental representations and their implications for educational practice. Our educational system is currently shaped by a particular set of mental representations that may not suit the ever-changing demands of contemporary society. By understanding historical changes in our mental representations, we can, for example, develop more effective teaching practices aligned with the ways our students understand and interact with the world.

This field of study also has important implications for our understanding of the history of science. Science is not just a collection of facts and theories but a dynamic process shaped by our mental representations of the natural world. By studying changes in these representations, we can trace the course of scientific revolutions and understand how our changing views of the natural world have influenced the course of scientific discovery.

The study of historical changes in mental representations therefore offers a powerful tool for understanding the evolution of human culture, cognition, education, science and many other possible areas. Such research not only enriches our understanding of ourselves as individuals and as a society but also has the potential to inform and influence our approach to education and scientific research in the future.
