In the article “Lotman’s scientific investigatory boldness: The semiosphere as a critical theory of communication in culture”, by Irene Machado, published in 2011 in the journal Sign Systems Studies 39 (1), the author examines the concept of the semiosphere in light of the conception of culture as information, as opposed to the mere transmission of messages from A to B. The approach is based on the broad process of meaning generation. Responding to Lotman’s critique of the paradoxes of communication and his theoretical approach, the article explores the following paradoxical questions: (1) the concept of message transmission from sender to receiver; (2) the idea of isolated processing systems; and (3) the notion that culture expresses a single language.
The semiosphere perspective suggests that the new object for addressing these controversies can be found in the concept of “text”. By placing the text at the heart of cultural analysis, we arrive at a perception according to which nothing arises in isolation. Machado explores the thought of Juri Lotman, who boldly embraces the hypothesis that the conceptual domain of the semiosphere is essential for the scientific study of culture.
Irene Machado is one of the leading references in the study of cultural semiotics and of the thought of its main figure, Juri Lotman. The article is valuable for anyone interested in this perspective.
