The Graduate Program in Science and Health Education (PPGECS) at the NUTES Institute, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), is accepting applications for the 2026 cohort. The application window is open until September 21, 2025. This is an opportunity for those who wish to advance research at the interface between education, health, science, and culture.
I will be offering supervision in three lines that directly connect with my current work: (1) simulation methodology, AI, and telehealth in higher education for health professions — covering initial training as well as continuing and lifelong education; (2) scientific imaginaries and representation processes, focused on meaning-making in educational and communicational practices in health education; and (3) science communication and science museums, with emphasis on audiovisual and interactive experiences.
At PPGECS, we welcome projects that combine academic rigor with openness to new forms of knowledge mediation. Our approach is interdisciplinary, recognizing that contemporary challenges in health and education do not fit rigid frames; it is precisely in these intersections that we aim to build solid and socially relevant research.
How to apply (all applicants): applications must be submitted by e-mail to instituto.nutes@gmail.com, with all required documents attached as separate PDFs in a single message; the e-mail subject line must read “SELEÇÃO MESTRADO 2026 – [APPLICANT NAME]”. Originals will be checked at enrollment. The program is in person, with regular activities on UFRJ’s campus in Rio de Janeiro, although the oral defenses (Stage 3) are conducted remotely. Results and official updates are posted on the program website.
Information for International Applicants
Reserved seats. The call reserves 2 (two) seats for international applicants, in addition to equal conditions regarding evaluation criteria and stages. If the reserved seats are not filled, they revert to the general pool.
Required identification and degree documentation (at application time):
- RNE (Registro Nacional de Estrangeiro) — front and back — or the passport identification pages (photo and signature).
- Undergraduate diploma (front and back). Diplomas must be from Brazilian HEIs recognized by MEC, or foreign diplomas recognized by the competent federal authorities in the country of origin or duly apostilled under international agreements.
Important: All mandatory documents must be sent by e-mail as PDFs (see “How to apply”). Confirmation of receipt is sent by e-mail and does not imply homologation; homologation occurs only after the selection committee verifies compliance. Originals must be presented at enrollment.
Language requirements.
- English proficiency (mandatory for all applicants): a valid certificate is required; if you do not have a valid certificate by the application deadline, you may submit it during the first semester (2026/01)—failure to do so results in dismissal. Accepted certifications include IELTS, TOEFL iBT/PBT/ITP, Cambridge PET/FCE, ECCE, TAPI, Duolingo English Test, and proficiency exams offered by Brazilian public universities/centers. Minimum scores include, for example, IELTS ≥ 4.0, TOEFL iBT ≥ 40, TOEFL PBT/ITP ≥ 430 (see full list and criteria in the call). Equivalents may substitute the certificate (e.g., 12 months of study in an English-speaking country or a B.A. in English Language/Letras-Inglês).
- Portuguese reading/comprehension (mandatory for international applicants): assessed during Stage 3 (oral defense) by the examining committee; no separate certificate is requested at application.
Selection format and timeline (high level).
- Stage 1 – Application (eliminatory): e-mail submission of documents, including Application Form, CV, Preliminary Research Project (max. 10 pages, Arial 12, 1.5 spacing), and Academic/Professional Statement (Memorial, max. 7 pages). See full structure in the call.
- Stage 2 – Preliminary Project evaluation (eliminatory).
- Stage 3 – Oral defenses (remote, eliminatory): Memorial + Project; identification by official photo ID at the session start; sessions may be recorded.
- Key dates: applications 08/18/2025–09/21/2025; homologation list 09/23/2025; Stage 2 result 10/13/2025; oral defenses 11/03–11/07/2025; final result sequence per the call.
If you identify with any of these research axes and wish to discuss potential project ideas or supervision fit, I am available to talk.
